Our
Mission
The Snow
Pond/Messalonskee Lake Association, a nonprofit volunteer organization,
is dedicated to the preservation of the lake. Its purpose is to
educate the public and promote the responsible use of the lake
through organizing, conducting, and supporting projects, programs,
and activities. These may include supporting wildlife preservation,
informing the public of the results of water quality monitoring,
teaching and promoting the practices which protect the water quality
of the lake ecosystem, and encouraging safe recreational use of
the lake. |
Our Commitment
We are committed
to fostering stewardship of our lake in the entire watershed for
the protection of the water quality, fish and wildlife therein,
and promoting the safe recreational use of our water. |
Our Current Focus
We are currently
working closely with the Executive Director of the Belgrade Regional
Conservation Alliance on erosion problems and with DEP on a Milfoil
Management Plan. Ongoing projects include the promotion of safe
boating and monitoring water quality. |

Background
The
Snow Pond/Messalonskee Lake Association began in 1989 with the formation
of a steering committee which included 16 or so individuals who were
very concerned about the future of our lake. This committee drafted
our first set of Bylaws and registered the organization as a non-profit
corporation in the State of Maine. Our first Annual Meeting was held
at the New England Music Camp in Sidney in 1990.
The
organization has been involved in many projects over the past decade.
Some have been ongoing since the beginning, such as the production of
the Newsletter, fundraising, and monitoring of lake water quality. Added
to this list over the years has been support for the Belgrade Lakes
Conservation Corps, the Congress of Lake Associations (COLA), and updates
to our Web Site. We have installed an informational sign at the Oakland
boat launch and watershed boundary signs on roads. We recently secured
a non-profit status at the Federal level allowing your contributions
to be tax deductible under Section 501(c)(3).
Currently
we are coordinating Courtesy Boat Inspections and Invasive Plant Patrols,
have drafted a management plan for variable-leaf milfoil to the Department
of Environmental Protection, and are trying to educate the public about
invasive plants and how they are spread.
All
future projects have one thing in common with past projects: they depend
on YOU! Both time and money are required to succeed in our future endeavors.
If you have some time and can help with a project that interests you,
please indicate so below. If you are able to support us financially,
please be generous! In this way we can hire people to do some of the
work that is critically needed.
